Patterns, scissors, leggings, in one word – IOLANDA

Iolanda Mutu
Current career?
I’m in the process of finding my vocation. In this moment, I’m pursuing a fashion design degree in Barcelona and simultaneously, experimenting with styling and personal shopping.
Did you have any early influences that sparked your interest in clothes?
From an early age, I was fascinated by my grandmother’s sewing machine – a “Singer”, the old fashioned kind. Every time she sat in front of it, I remember getting this unique feeling of curiosity, inspiration and pure joy.
What inspired you to pursue fashion?
Right after I graduated from highschool, I met Eniko Szanto – a talented fashion stylist who worked for a national TV channel. She took me under her wing and called me “the apprentice”. 🙂
What was the first article of clothing you ever designed?
When I was in London, I was impressed by the variety of colorful and funky leggigns I saw in the small shops in Camden Town. Upon my return to Bucharest, I started to make my own leggings, which turned into my pesonal statement piece.

Do you prefer sketching designs or actually constructing them?
Constructing, because it stimulates my imagination and creativity to a greater extent than sketching. However, I find sketching to be very important as well.
Describe the general process you go through to design and realize a piece of clothing.
I opt for a playful approach when it comes to creating a new garment. I like to experiment with different materials, prints, textures, try different options and let my imagination flow.

What are your favorite colors to work with and why?
I like most colors, I can’t say I have a favorite one. My choices are influenced mostly by my state of mind in the moment I pick a material. The experiences I go through in my life are also a determining factor.
Whose work do you admire the most?
I feel like Alexander McQueen was truly genius, and I was very sad to hear about his premature end. At the moment, I admire the work and vision of a group of very talented, young, contemporary Belgian designers. On the local scene, I wouldn’t hesitate for one moment to wear any of Ingrid Vlaslov‘s creations. Sandra Galan is also very talented, and the list may go on.
Describe your personal style
It’s not easy for me to define my own style.
What do you feel best when wearing?
Lately, I feel best when I wear my own dresses. They empower and make me feel special.
